Design Technology
At The Beaulieu Park Primary School, we believe that design plays a vital role in everyday life. Our Design and Technology curriculum encourages children to become creative problem-solvers, developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to design, make and evaluate products that have a real purpose and audience. Through practical and engaging experiences, pupils learn how design shapes the world around them and how innovation can improve people's lives.
Our curriculum is organised around three key areas: Cooking, Sewing and Building. Each year, children have opportunities to develop skills within all three areas, allowing them to gain experience of food technology, textiles and product design. Alongside these practical elements, pupils explore important themes such as sustainability, enterprise and innovation, helping them understand the wider impact of design in modern society.
A central feature of our curriculum is the design process. Children learn to research and investigate, generate ideas, design, make, test and evaluate products. They are encouraged to consider the needs of the user, the purpose of the product and the effectiveness of their designs. As pupils progress through the school, they become increasingly confident in using tools, materials and techniques while developing the resilience and problem-solving skills needed to refine and improve their work.
Through cooking and nutrition units, children develop essential life skills by preparing and cooking a range of dishes. They learn about healthy eating, nutrition, seasonality, food production and food from different cultures. By building their culinary knowledge and practical skills over time, pupils gain an appreciation of food as an important part of both health and cultural identity.
In textiles and construction projects, children work with a variety of materials and technologies to create products such as sewn items, structures, mechanical models and electrical devices. They explore how products are designed, how materials behave and how scientific concepts such as forces, motion and electricity influence design. This enables pupils to make meaningful links between Design and Technology and other curriculum subjects, particularly science, art and history.
Throughout their learning, pupils evaluate existing products, analyse the work of designers and innovators, and reflect on their own creations. They learn that successful design is an iterative process that involves testing, adapting and improving ideas over time. Recording their ideas, designs and evaluations helps children see their progression and develop a deeper understanding of the design journey.
By the time pupils leave The Beaulieu Park Primary School, they will have developed a broad range of practical skills, an understanding of the design process and an appreciation of how design and technology influence the world around them. We aim for every child to leave with the creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills needed to become thoughtful designers and informed consumers in an ever-changing world.
