Religious Education

At The Beaulieu Park Primary School, our Religious Education curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of religious and non-religious worldviews through a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum. RE encourages children to explore important questions about belief, identity, meaning and human existence, whilst developing respect, curiosity and understanding of the diverse world in which they live.

Through their learning, pupils gain a secure understanding of the six major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism, alongside selected non-religious worldviews, including Humanism. Children learn about beliefs, practices, traditions and ways of life, whilst recognising the diversity that exists within each faith and worldview. This helps pupils develop an appreciation of both common themes and unique perspectives across different communities and cultures.

Our curriculum develops three important strands of learning: substantive knowledge, disciplinary knowledge and personal reflection. Children learn key religious concepts and beliefs, explore how knowledge about religion is constructed through sources such as sacred texts, artefacts and traditions, and consider how their learning relates to their own values, experiences and understanding of the world.

A key feature of our curriculum is the study of religion through informed and respectful enquiry. Pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, analyse evidence, consider different viewpoints and develop reasoned responses. They learn that individuals within the same faith may hold different beliefs and practices, helping them understand the complexity and richness of religious traditions.

Learning is carefully structured so that key themes and concepts are revisited throughout primary school with increasing depth and complexity. Children explore important ideas such as community, prayer, sacred texts, justice, freedom, charity, duty and morality. As they progress through the school, they make meaningful connections between different religions, philosophical ideas and ethical questions, building a deeper understanding of how beliefs influence people's lives.

RE at The Beaulieu Park Primary School is not about promoting any particular belief system or asking children to participate in religious practice. Instead, it provides opportunities to learn about religions and worldviews academically, encouraging open-mindedness, respect and critical thinking. Through discussion and reflection, pupils develop emotional intelligence, empathy and the confidence to express their own views while valuing the perspectives of others.

By the time pupils leave The Beaulieu Park Primary School, they will have developed a broad understanding of different religions and worldviews, an ability to think critically about complex questions and a respect for the diversity of beliefs within modern society. We aim for every child to leave as a thoughtful, informed and compassionate individual, well prepared to contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive world.
