Geography

At The Beaulieu Park Primary School, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the world and deepen pupils’ understanding of the people, places and environments that shape it. Through a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum, children develop a secure understanding of geographical concepts and skills, enabling them to make meaningful connections and see how different parts of the world are interconnected.

Our curriculum builds knowledge progressively from year to year, ensuring that pupils develop a strong understanding of their local area, the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world. Children explore both physical geography, such as rivers, mountains, climate and natural environments, and human geography, including settlements, trade, migration, land use and globalisation. Through these studies, pupils gain an appreciation of the complex relationships between people and the environment.

At the heart of our curriculum are the key geographical concepts of place, space, environment and interconnection. Children learn to ask and answer important geographical questions, such as what it is like to live in different places, how environments change over time and how human activity affects the world around us. They also learn about significant explorers and the impact that migration, exploration and global development have had on different societies and cultures.

A distinctive feature of our curriculum is the annual Spatial Sense unit taught in every year group. These units develop essential geographical skills, including map reading, using grid references and coordinates, interpreting scales, analysing data, reading climate graphs and understanding geographical information systems. As pupils progress through the school, they become increasingly confident in using maps, atlases, globes and geographical data to investigate and explain the world around them.

Fieldwork is an important part of geographical learning. In Key Stage 1, children use observational skills to explore their school and local environment, while older pupils undertake more detailed local studies, collecting, analysing and presenting geographical information. These real-world experiences help children apply their learning and develop as young geographers.

Throughout their time at The Beaulieu Park Primary School, pupils study a diverse range of locations and regions, including different parts of the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. They learn about different cultures, environments and ways of life, developing an understanding of both the diversity of our world and the shared challenges facing global communities.

By the time pupils leave The Beaulieu Park Primary School, they will have developed a rich body of geographical knowledge, strong fieldwork and map skills, and an understanding of the interconnected nature of our world. We aim for every child to leave with the curiosity, knowledge and responsibility needed to become informed and active global citizens.
